Finding your voice is a colorful proposition.

The soul searching continues. After a week of dedicating a good portion of my time to painting I have come to my first crossroads. A piece I have been working through was drying from the latest coat of acrylic. I realized I wasn't having nearly as much fun as I used to. All of the ideas of being a great artist and not knowing your place yet is a very confusing and frustrating stage .

From what I have read, you just keep punching the clock in front of the canvas and it will come, and do I believe that to be true. Finding my mind going in a few different directions, I decided to shut down the art theory for the evening and get dirty...maybe even abstract.

With blank board in front of me, I started splotching on paint and forming shapes without concern. The series of brush strokes that followed was a whirlwind. Little thought was given to composition, it was just fun to put paint on a surface without worrying whether or not it was going to be a masterpiece (I know I am setting my bar a little high).

Exercise #1

After finishing for the evening, I realized the excitement of throwing caution to the wind and not knowing what is around the corner is the fun part about painting. I had nothing on my mind other than covering the bare surface with blocks of paint. If nothing else, this exercise taught me to enjoy the process and don't take it too seriously. I am not King Midas, and not everything I touch will be gold. All that I can do is be myself and trust that my gut will lead me in the right direction.
